The Turf World Championships With HK$83 Million Total Prize Money
The global racing calendar reaches a competitive climax every year with the LONGINES Hong Kong International Races in December. The Club welcomes Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and racegoers from around the world to this week-long party, racing festival and supremacy decider.
The first big event of the festivities is the LONGINES International Jockeys’ Championship on 9 December. Taking place round the spectacularly unique city racetrack at Happy Valley, it’s the richest and probably the most fiercely contested jockeys’ challenge anywhere in the world.
The LONGINES International Jockeys’ Championship provides a superb prelude to Sunday’s climax. Twelve world-class world jockeys representing their countries or regions always put on a magnificent show while competing for top honours and the HK$800,000 prize money in this annual four-race championship; and the quality of the field this year, featuring the winning riders of many of the world’s major races, clearly reflects the fact that this is a competition every riding star longs to win.
The week’s next un-missable event is the barrier draw for the LONGINES International Races on Thursday morning, 10 December, an entertainment in itself at the spectacular Parade Ring at Sha Tin Racecourse where fans, media and professionals alike witness the reactions of Owners, Trainers and Jockeys to the vital post positions their horses receive for Sunday’s great races.
The true stars of any race meeting though are, of course, the horses. Each morning’s trackwork as the big day approaches, and as champions from around the world are put through their paces in front of the public at Sha Tin Racecourse, is an event in itself, as is the lavish post-trackwork breakfast during which connections and the media share their hopes and views.
And what would any world-class sporting event be without a gala evening? International racing guests are invited to a superb LONGINES HKIR Gala Dinner on Friday night, where the friendships they have made during the week are strengthened and extended amid a cornucopia of gourmet food, fine wines and a festive atmosphere. It is also the night when the World’s Best Jockey receives his highly coveted award.
Then, on Saturday, overseas guests may spend their own free time to enjoy Hong Kong’s many delights, before the most anticipated event of the week, and one of the most anticipated of the entire global calendar: Sunday’s LONGINES Hong Kong International Races on 13 December.
