Silvestre De Sousa and Sweet Selection won the Group Three Longines Sagaro Stakes at Ascot on Wednesday.
The flat season began in style as De Sousa rode the winners in the opening three races of the day, culminating in Sweet Selection’s battling display in the Longines Sagaro Stakes.
Powering on from second place Prince of Arran, the 15-2 winner made the most of rivals battling amongst themselves to comfortably hold on during the final furlong.
It was Godolphin’s Blue Point who enjoyed arguably the most impressive victory of the day as he strode clear in the extremely competitive Group Three Merriebelle Stakes Pavilion Stakes.
William Buick let his triple juvenile winner go one furlong out and he strode away from second place Harry Angel who could once again meet in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot in June.
The opening race of the flat season at Ascot saw a surprise, with 12-1 shot Frozen Angel showing an impressive turn of foot to draw clear of his four rivals to land the Sodexo Conditions Stakes.
Frankel filly Icespire’s form took a knock in the Spinal Injuries Association British EBF Fillies’ Conditions Stakes as the hot favourite couldn’t find an early run and despite running on impressively, wasn’t able to catch leader Prosper who held on in a photo finish for Roger Varian to land Silvestre De Sousa a double.
